Meatspace

Do we build an identity onto our bodies like a hermit crab builds a shell or do our bodies -and other bodies- force an identity onto us? Where do our bodies stop and start? How do the body’s physical states influence psychological processes? When did the body learn the words to call itself, and can we find new ones? What do we hear if we listen to our meat speak?

COVEN BERLIN’s next project focuses on the world of flesh and blood.
Meatspace.

Privileged bodies, heterosexual bodies, sick bodies, queer bodies, endangered bodies, young bodies, colonized bodies, conforming bodies, othered bodies.

Join Meatspace, a queer feminist artistic approach to the visibility, representation and performance of different bodies focusing on the legibility and intersection of identities, persisting narratives surrounding safety, and the physical experiences of those who cannot afford to believe that they are just bodies.

Meatspace will present the work of artists of various disciplines in the form of talks, performances, and visual art with a common focus on the physical realities of the body. The event will take place 12th-13th November 2016 at The Impossible Project Lab (Potsdamer Str. 87, Berlin, Germany).

13:00 // BODY PAINTING WORKSHOP
Hosted by Adriatica BodyArt
Inspired by avantgarde, cyberpunk, movies, alien aesthetics and futuristic looks this workshop will take it a step further and paint our body. Understanding the body as an artistic medium, we will explore the magic of metamorphosis and dare to become what we imagine. Be wild, be creative, be yourself. You will be provided with colors, brushes, sponges and props so you can go crazy and create your own look.

15:00 // PIXELS: COLLAGE WORKSHOP

Reality is made out of pre-made blocks. Out of them, make something that is your own. Join this workshop curated by the Spanish artist Natalia Gonzalez. We provide the bits and pieces, as well as the space to breathe and be inspired.

18:00 // WOMEN IN EXILE TALK
Presented by Solange from Women in Exile e.V.
Solange will speak about the daily reality of living as a refugee, and more specifically an African woman seeking asylum. She will present footage from refugee shelters in Germany, briefly discuss asylum law, and the dangers of living in a body that is policed for the borders it has transgressed.

19:00 // OPEN DISCUSSION: SCREENS OF SURVEILLANCE
Hosted by READ WHAT YOU WANT, an open-discussion on and critique of excessive force, the history of cops, and the intersections between body, property and law enforcement. Our driving questions are – When is your body in the way of the Law? When does the Law see your body in the way? We invite you to share texts, opinions and personal experiences. The discussion will be accompanied by the video “O v e r R e a c h”.
